The U19(B) Jr. Shamrocks Lose Heartbreaker In State Quarterfinals

Saturday night the U19(B) Jr. Shamrocks scored the first goal for the fourth straight Massachusetts State Tier II Championship Tournament game when Courtney Smith scored an unassisted goal at 10:17 of the first period of the State Tier II quarterfinal game against the Bay State Breakers at the New England Sports Center in Marlboro, Mass. The Breakers would get on the board before the first period ended to tie the game. The first period ended in a 1-1 tie. The Breakers scored the only goal of the second period to go ahead 2-1.

The opening minutes of the third period was a scoring frenzy. The Jr. Shamrocks scored two goals in the first 38 seconds of the third period to go up 3-2. Shannon Hickey put one past the Breakers goalie, assisted by Melinda Vercollone, at 11:42 and Samantha Barrett and Lea Rivers assisted on a goal by Colleen Good at 11:22 of the third period. The Breakers then scored two quick goals in the next 40 seconds to regain the lead at 4-3. The Jr. Shamrocks tied it back up at 4-4 only 47 seconds later on a goal by Rivers assisted by Smith and Cathrine Salvetti.

After a total of 5 goals being scored by both teams in 2 minutes and 5 seconds and with the scored tied at 4-4 the teams settled down and battled each other in a back and forth nail bitter with the winner going to the Massachusetts State Tier II semifinal game. The Breakers were finally able to break the tie and score the eventual game winner with only 3 minutes remaining in the state quarterfinal contest to go up for good and win the game 5-4 and advance to the State Semifinals against the East Coast Wizards.
